There is a common feature to many of the stories that I shepherd my clients through as they explore and expand their own stories.

Over and over there is a setting off, a leaving behind, a movement away from something, often as a result of banishment or forcing out by “others.” (In quotes…because that’s a whole other topic)

Depending on the setting of the story, and the land and culture out of which it grew, the exodus may unfold in different ways. But it is always there. And frankly, it’s what makes the story.

The journey the main character goes on is often into woods or some other wilderness. It might even be to distant or dramatically different lands or waters than what they’re accustomed to. Their travel is often harsh and difficult, and the places they arrive to tend to be shadowy, rough, and frightening.

But away they go. Away from the place where they grew up, from the place where they were once, but are no longer, nurtured.

While they are away, they are tested. Whether with some physical task or an effort of will, across time and geographies and cultures, characters are seriously challenged (often at the hands of some beastly or devilish sort of being). They may be stretched to the brink, broken down, unraveled, and undone in the process.

Through that characters unlock inner powers and potential that would have otherwise gone undiscovered and unrealized.

Handling the tests changes them!

In the process they gain wisdom, valuable knowledge, identify inner strengths, and learn to trust themselves. The “self” that they were when they started out, dissolves and a new “self” shines forward.

They come to recognize that though they may return from where they came, they never go back the same.

The pattern in the stories can’t be by chance. It can’t be mere coincidence.

Growing it seems, always starts with GOING.

  • What’s the wild place that YOU are heading into?
  • What tests might await?
  • What courage, innate capabilities, and insights will carry you through?
  • How will you evolve in your ever unfolding story?

Let’s walk into your wilderness together. I’ve got you!
